Circle

CIRCLE

Circles are not just sacred, they are also continuous with no corners or definitive edges. They create a continuous energy flow both into the center, around the circle and expanding out. It also encourages us to learn and move in a way that is nonlinear and non-hierarchical, moving us away from the back and front style of learning that dominate our learning experiences. A circle represents connection, wholeness and fullness.

Repetition

REPETITION

Repetition is all around us, and when we see it aesthetically, visually, we pause... we reflect. Every ancient church, temple, mosque and monastery all have repeating patterns. Repetition and pattern give us the structure to connect and the freedom to explore and expand in that connection. It also helps enforce body memory and release control from the mind. With every repetition we have the opportunity of experiencing and suggesting a new sensation, which allows us to go deeper with those sensations and expand our experience, exploration, self creation and destruction and the continuity of cycles in life.

Building

BUILDING

Building the sequence is one of Sircles key components. It is this component that eases and maintains the mind and body into a flowstate. To maintain a flow, we build the sequence gradually and isolate the sequence based on feeling, sensation and facts. This way when the body in movement, it is repeating and remembering a sensation and the mind cannot interfere. So the sequence forms like a string of sensations versus a string of movements. Even for those students who are able to physically do more, we have them slow down and repeats and builds so that the mind never outpaces us.

Music

MUSIC

It has been scientifically proven that music impacts various parts of our brain and more specifically stimulates our parasympathetic nervous system and emotion. It is our connection from feeling to expression. When music enters through the auditory sense it is experienced with our whole body, expresses it. Whether it is personal, societal or universal, music helps us to comfort a variety of emotions, tensions and feelings. We find ourselves just curious by or our days, in Sircle we make time for emotions and feelings, and the music is intentionally rhythmic or caringly musical. Normally the music tends to be non-political specific, representative, culture and world music.

Meditation

MEDITATION

Our days are filled with information overload, and most of the times we are in our head. And by using our breath to move and allowing a meditative practice on our intention to finish out the past, create a wall for the future, and create an empty vehicle in which we may arrive in the present. And this awareness of the present is what allows us to drop in to our bodies, so that in the practice we move from tension to rest not from the mind.

Breath

BREATH

The initiation of breath in the meditation helps release any blockages and empty out anything that doesn't serve so that when we start to move we do it more with more easily set the body versus the mind. Once the breathe starts moving easily, it's a sign that when we start the physical practice, we have a different name for this energy. In Yoga it's called Prana, the energy. In life force in 氣 Qi or Chi. In Sircle we call it "a charge" or "charging". By movements using breathe, the practice energizes versus depletes the energy.

Form & Feeling

FORM & FEELING

In current radical dance forms, form is frequently overlooked, in that case it feels like a free form, then it is more like a drug. You get a high, activated and release but after the space is over you are left feeling the impact in the body. The purpose of Sircle is to become a part of the body's intelligence in and out of the dance practice. Which is why we pay more attention to the form and digging a lot deeper into what we feel, how we feel, and our work helps release and enhance freedom and expansion.
